Week 2.2 Modernism

The twentieth century begins in the golden period of modernist aesthetics.

In a complex historical context. Not only for the Russian Revolution (1917), the colonization of Africa and Asia, which led to the First World War.. In my case, my country, Spain, modernism entered just after of "the disaster of 98" where Spain was lost the territories “Ultramar”- Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines by the United States.

From this data, you can understand better, why modernism meant the resurrection of anguish (which characterized in europe the romantic literature) Why, rejects the realism of the previous stage. Why continually reminded that past world, that already gone ...

"if the trajectory of the term "modernism" is unclear, equally there is no broad critical consensus about modernism historical periodization. [...] "perhaps for this reason the relationship of modernism to modernity are equally clear." -  (Modernist woman and the visual cultures - Virsinic Woolf, Vanesa Bell. p.16)
Started by Ruben Dario fully in 1888 with the publication of Azul. But If I have to speak about the modernism in Spain, it would be really literal ignorance, forgetting the biggest authors; Valle Inclan, Antonio Machado and Jose Marti.

Nevertheless, the intolerance by some of the modernists, about sexuality and feminism, affected to the women writers and also in the authors who wanted to talk about it.
Perhaps for fear of breaking these rules at the time and its possible repercussions.
Needless to point out that not all modernists had the same mentality. Like Oscar Wilde and Montero.

Antonio Machado.

"Caminante, son tus huellas

el camino y nada más;

Caminante, no hay camino,

se hace camino al andar.

Al andar se hace el camino,

y al volver la vista atrás

se ve la senda
que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.

Caminante no hay camino

sino estelas en la mar."

"Wayfarer, your footsteps

the way and nothing more;

Wayfarer, there is no way,

is made by walking.

When you walk you make the way
and looking back
the path
 is never
has to be trod again.

Caminante no hay camino

Only wakes upon the sea."

By Antonio Machado - Caminante - Wayfarer.
